Smart Cities

Smart cities represent a radical shift in living styles and urban planning, where new buildings and systems adapt to modern technology and pressing environmental conditions. A smart city possesses an advanced system relying on infrastructure anchored in digital communication and information technology to monitor and track its parts, components, inhabitants, and basic services, road networks, and resources such as water and energy.

Objectives of Transitioning to Smart Cities and Their Benefits

  • Optimal and efficient utilization of available resources.
  • Achieving citizen security and well-being while providing high-quality services.
  • Preserving natural resources and the environment while conserving energy consumption.
  • Facilitating traffic flow and stimulating investment and economic activity.

Basic Factors and Rules for Managing Smart Cities

Building and managing a smart city requires a set of fundamental pillars and factors, most notably:

  • E-Government: For managing the city and citizens’ daily transactions in a fully integrated digital manner.
  • Learning from Developed Countries’ Experiences: While respecting local peculiarities of each country and avoiding blind copying of models.
  • Adopting the “The Most Expensive is the Cheapest” Principle: By applying the best available information technology and avoiding lower-quality methods despite lower initial costs.
  • Budgeting for the Future: Allocating substantial budgets specifically for technical projects, separate from previous years’ budgets.
  • Security and Privacy: Protecting the virtual information world from tampering or sabotage.
  • Spreading Digital Culture: By building strong ties with the private sector and media entities.
  • Creating Equal Opportunities: For innovators and developers, supporting projects with calculated risks, and enhancing communication among societal strata.

Smart Applications in Infrastructure

1. Smart Water Resource Management

Water management in smart cities requires digital solutions to reduce energy consumption by up to 30% and cut water losses in distribution networks by up to 15%. Smart water management and cycles are divided into key areas including:

  • Protecting the natural environment and ecosystems and assessing the impacts of development projects.
  • Mitigating natural disasters and risks such as floods and torrents.
  • Live monitoring of automated monitoring networks and installing leak detection devices.
  • Raising energy efficiency through smart distribution networks and treatment plants.

2. Smart Traffic Systems

To address traffic congestion, energy waste, and polluting emissions, smart traffic systems are divided into two main categories:

  • Smart Infrastructure: Including arterial and highway management systems, transport management, incident management, emergency management, and electronic toll collection.
  • Smart Vehicles: Equipped with devices and sensors to assist drivers in various situations, categorized into three main systems: warning systems, guidance systems (such as navigation and electronic maps), and automated accident reporting systems.
